Walter Elmer Schofield was an American landscape painter known for his expansive, panoramic depictions of nature. Born to English émigré parents, Schofield’s early life was marked by a period spent as a cowboy in the West, which inspired some of his first works. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Julian’s Academy in Paris, he was influenced by Impressionism and plein-air painting. Schofield spent much of his career traveling between the U.S. and England, with notable time in St. Ives, Cornwall, where he became involved with other artists and helped promote American works in British exhibitions. Schofield’s landscape and marine paintings earned numerous awards, including medals at the Paris Salon, Carnegie Institute, and Panama-Pacific Exposition. He was a prominent figure in the American Impressionist movement. Schofield spent his final years in Cornwall, where he passed away in 1944.
