Simon Combes grew up in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, where his love for the wilderness began. After a challenging boarding school experience, he worked as a farm manager before joining the British military, where he trained soldiers and commanded a paratrooper unit during Kenya’s independence. During his military service, Combes developed a passion for painting, focusing on the people and landscapes of northern Kenya. In 1969, he had a successful exhibition in Nairobi, prompting him to pursue a career in art after leaving the army in 1974. Known for his stunning wildlife depictions, Combes gained international acclaim and received numerous awards. His works have been published worldwide, and he authored books including An African Experience and Great Cats. A dedicated conservationist, Combes raised funds for wildlife causes through his art. Tragically, he was killed in 2004 by a wild animal in the Great Rift Valley, leaving behind a legacy of art and conservation.
