Tonalist western landscape painting, lithographs

Russell Chatham was a celebrated American landscape artist and author who spent much of his career in Livingston, Montana. Although the grandson of landscape painter Gottardo Piazzoni, Chatham was largely self-taught. Over five decades, he held more than 400 solo exhibitions, gaining collectors such as Robert Hughes, Paul Allen, and Jack Nicholson.
Chatham’s work distinguished itself from typical western art by portraying landscapes in intimate relationship with the human figure, even in its absence. In the 1980s, he began creating intricate lithographs, becoming one of the foremost practitioners of the craft. His lithographs, featuring up to 40 layers of hand-drawn colors, were known for their depth and subtlety, differing from modern lithography processes. Chatham also produced original oil paintings.
