Owen Justus Gromme developed a deep connection to nature through his father and local hunters. He spent his youth hunting and observing wildlife, a passion that shaped his life. Gromme worked at the Milwaukee Public Museum for 43 years, eventually becoming Curator of Birds and Mammals. His extensive fieldwork, including expeditions to Alaska and Hudson Bay, led him to create scientifically accurate dioramas and illustrations. A key figure in the museum, Gromme also created dioramas for Milwaukee schools.
A lifelong conservationist, Gromme’s paintings helped fund significant environmental projects, including those for the International Crane Foundation and Ducks Unlimited. His work earned him several honorary doctorates and widespread recognition. Gromme authored Birds of Wisconsin, illustrated with his paintings, and contributed to many publications. He also helped develop the Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.
