Malcolm Furlow, an award-winning painter and Taos resident, led a diverse and dynamic life before fully embracing his passion for art. Originally receiving a track scholarship to the University of Texas, he switched his major to art, only to leave college after his professor disapproved of his style. Furlow then pursued a successful 18-year career as a rock-and-roll musician, playing sax, bass, and guitar with notable acts like the Beach Boys and Lou Rawls. After leaving music, he used his artistic talents to build movie set models for Walt Disney Studios and authored a photography book for Kodak.
In 1987, inspired by Joseph Campbellās advice to “Follow Your Bliss,” Furlow returned to painting. He focused on Native American themes, using vibrant acrylics to convey the culture and dignity of his subjects. His work gained widespread recognition, with pieces in prestigious collections, including U.S. embassies and the White House. Furlow passed away in 2023.
