Landscape painter Jim Rey was raised in Palo Alto, California, and spent his summers on his grandfather’s ranch. He attended Shadduck, a private school in Faribault, Minnesota, and then studied journalism at a junior college before starting a career as a commercial artist.

At age 30, he started painting while working as graphics director for Public Broadcasting System’s Bilingual Children’s Television, and in this capacity did some of the first computer animation for TV. However, the demand for his work was so great that he quit and moved with his family to Colorado.

He located his studio on his ranch near Durango and usually paints on location. He also did a painting for a golf course on Nantucket Island.
