James Surls is a modernist sculptor known for his intricate wooden sculptures that blend natural and human forms. He uses techniques like carving, whittling, and staining to create a distinctive monotone effect, occasionally incorporating burning to add texture. Some of his pieces reach heights of up to nine feet. A native of East Texas, Surls earned his B.S. from Sam Houston University and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1998, he relocated to Carbondale, Colorado. Surls’ work has been showcased in major New York museums, including the Whitney, Guggenheim, and MoMA, and his sculptures are part of numerous public collections. His 2009 bronze and steel pieces were displayed on Park Avenue through the NYC Parks Public Art Program. Inspired by nature, his sculptures often explore mythological and metaphorical themes. A respected educator, Surls has taught at institutions like Southern Methodist University and the University of Houston.
