KNOWN FOR

Abstract form-protean shape painting

Emily Mason was a masterful colorist whose abstract paintings pulse with vibrant energy and fluid movement. Her work is defined by layered, saturated hues contrasted with delicate washes, creating a dynamic interplay of depth and texture. Mason’s brushstrokes—scumbled, scraped, or softly blended—allow colors to seep into one another, forming compositions with no rigid edges, only seamless transitions.

Often dominated by two or three colors, her canvases contain an entire spectrum beneath the surface, woven into textures and tucked into corners with unexpected bursts of pigment. She rarely used white paint, instead relying on the primed canvas for luminosity. Influenced by light, her paintings shift with the seasons, capturing a sense of place without directly representing landscapes. Mason’s bold yet intuitive approach to color creates works that transcend abstraction, celebrating the pure sensation of painting itself—an exuberant, ever-evolving exploration of hue, harmony, and movement.
