After completing his naval service and studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, von Hassler arrived in New York in 1912, later serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1922, he settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where his fascination with the Southwest flourished. He became renowned for his detailed studies of Native American culture and landscapes.
