Blanche Chloe Grant was a painter, illustrator, educator, and writer, known for her work capturing the culture of New Mexico. She was educated in the East, studying at prestigious institutions such as Vassar College, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Boston School of Fine Arts. After teaching at the University of Nebraska in 1916, she left in 1919 for a six-month stint in France as a YMCA secretary, marking the end of her time in Nebraska.
In Taos, New Mexico, Grant immersed herself in the area’s rich Southwestern culture, focusing her art and writing on the “romantic and colorful” aspects of Taos life. She was a member of the Taos Art Association and wrote books including When Old Trails Were New and Taos Indians. Her works are housed in collections such as the Museum of the Southwest and Harwood Foundation in Taos. Grant died in 1948, leaving a legacy of artistic and literary contributions to the region.
