Alyce Frank
1932 – 2024

BORN IN
New Iberia, Louisiana
KNOWN FOR
Modernist western landscape painting
Alyce Frank, was a resident of Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico since 1962. She began painting seriously in 1973 and was known for her bold, expressive interpretations of the landscape. Drawing inspiration from northern New Mexico, the canyonlands of Utah, and Canyon de Chelly, she often starts her paintings on site but deliberately moves beyond direct observation. Frank rejects literal color and detail in favor of freedom, using landscape forms as a foundation for emotional and structural exploration. Her work has been described as featuring “chromatic exaggeration” and “visually explosive fauvist interpretations” of nature. A pivotal influence on her style was a 1981 exhibition of German Expressionism, which emphasized the emotional power of subject matter over realistic representation.
