Doug Hyde
b. 1946
BORN IN
Hermiston, Oregon
KNOWN FOR
Native American sculpture
Known for native American figures, Doug Hyde casts bronze sculpture from original stone work but prefers to do originals from stone because he loves the resistance of the medium.
He has been a long-time resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, but was born in Hermiston, Oregon into the Nez Perce tribe. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe where he was one of the first students of Allan Houser, the highly successful Apache sculptor.
Hyde then served in the Army for two tours of Vietnam, and was seriously wounded in a Saigon grenade attack.
