Kaws

Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, is a New York-based artist and designer recognized for his limited-edition toys, clothing, and iconic artwork. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, KAWS graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 1996. He briefly worked as a freelance animator for Disney before transitioning to street art in the 1990s, subverting advertisements across New York City. His work gained international recognition, leading to collaborations with global brands like Nike, Vans, and Comme des Garçons. In the late ’90s, KAWS began creating limited edition vinyl toys, which became popular worldwide, particularly in Japan. His art often features reworked pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse and The Simpsons, with a focus on universal, cross-cultural symbols. KAWS has exhibited his work in major cities, including Tokyo, Paris, and New York, with his largest museum show held at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
